• 4th Century Nicholas of Myra Shows Deep Devotion to Children
Batavia, Ill., Dec. 24, 2009 (The Religion Wire™) — In the fourth century, Nicholas of Myra (a city in Turkey) gave selflessly to the needs of children. His example of sacrifice inspired many 19th and 20th century writers in poem and book to give birth to our modern Santa Claus. Can this kind of sacrificial love again set the tone for a 21st century American Christmas?
“Saint Nicholas gives us—parents, other adult family members, and the whole community—an example of how to genuinely love children at Christmas-time and throughout the year,” notes John Ross, an advocate for Children’s Day (second Sunday in June) and founder of the website, www.nationalchildrensday.us, and its mirror www.childrensday.us. “I hope that the life of Nicholas will be further examined by every American for his devotion to children and his love of God and Christ.”
The website www.saintnicholascenter.org expands with the following thought:
“Children around the world know and love St. Nicholas, for he brings gifts and treats in December. He is known by different names—and even looks different from place to place. But, it is the same St. Nicholas who delights with small surprises and good things to eat. Nicholas gave in secret, alert to others’ needs, and expecting nothing for himself in return. It is this selfless generosity which seeks only the good of the other that made Nicholas’ gifts the gifts of a saint.”
