• Mother’s and Father’s Day Also Initiated by WomenChildren's Day - Second Sunday in June

Batavia, Ill.,May 5, 2010 (The Religion Wire™) — Women were behind the formation of Mother’s and Father’s Day in the early twentieth century. Perhaps history will record Mabel Ross as the inspiration for the revival of Children’s Day (second Sunday in June) as Anna Jarvis is credited for Mother’s Day and Sonora Smart Dodd with Father’s Day.

“I’d sure like my late mother, Mabel Ross, to be honored for her passion for Children’s Day,” notes John Ross, an advocate for Children’s Day (second Sunday in June) and founder of the website, www.nationalchildrensday.us, and its mirror www.childrensday.us. “In 2005, after I had worked for years on a local children’s festival, she got me involved. She told me to expand my vision and help revive the Children’s Day of her youth,”

“We’re fortunate to have a great base of churches that have historically supported the day,” states Ross. “I’m hopeful that we can expand this base to the rest of America. We’re making progress each year. A greater commitment to children will help shape a brighter and more positive future for our country. Yes, Children’s Day is coming!”

Children’s Day observations in the United States date from the 1860s and earlier.

Currently, Chase’s Calendar of Events cites June 13 as Children’s Sunday.

Numerous churches and denominations, including the African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and the Church of the Nazarene, now observe the second Sunday in June as Children’s Day.
