• Wayside’s Urban Youth Ministry Opens Aurora Neighborhood Baseball League
Aurora, Ill., May 12, 2010 (The Religion Wire™) — Urban Youth Ministry (UYM) of Wayside Cross Ministries (WCM) is set to begin its 17th season of inspiring, motivating, and training the youth of Aurora via the means of baseball. On Saturday, June 5, at 9:30 a.m., the Aurora Neighborhood Baseball League will hold its season opening games and celebration at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Farnsworth Avenue and Grand Boulevard. The public is encouraged to attend this opening day celebration.
The 10-team league draws over 150 boys and girls from the diverse communities of Aurora and works to bridge the racial and economic divide with the league’s deep spiritual commitment to wholeness. The league is comprised of two T-Ball teams, ages 6-8, and eight little league teams, ages 9–10. The season games (June 5–July 31) for the league are held at MLK., Jr. Park and Copley II Park, 517 N. Union St.
“This growing league is in need of committed Christian volunteers,” expresses Scot Thurman, director of UYM. “The need is great, but the results are for a lifetime.”
Beyond the baseball season, UYM is committed to mentoring youth throughout the whole year.
Other UYM programs include: free fishing camp; free summer camp; golf camps; community outreach and community benevolence to children and families; R.E.A.D. in two elementary schools and book clubs in two middle schools.
