Batavia, Ill., June 1, 2010 (The Religion Wire™) — Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has proclaimed Sunday, June 13, as “Children’s Day” in Illinois. The Illinois governor is joined by the mayors of Batavia and Aurora, Illinois, in issuing Children’s Day (second Sunday in June) proclamations.

Children’s Day - Second Sunday in June

“I’m so happy that Governor Pat Quinn, Batavia Mayor Jeffery Schielke, and Aurora Mayor Thomas Weisner have again recognized the need for Children’s Day,” expresses John Ross, an advocate for Children’s Day (second Sunday in June) and founder of the website, www.nationalchildrensday.us, and its mirror www.childrensday.us. Ross continues, “In previous years the Governor and the mayors have been totally supportive of the day and the commitment to our children. Illinois is taking the lead for the national renewal of this important day. But this movement also is spreading in other states and communities, for which we are so thankful. The celebration of Children’s Day is a national movement.”

Children’s Day observations in the United States date from the 1860s and earlier.

Currently, Chase’s Calendar of Events cites June 13 as Children’s Sunday.

Numerous churches and denominations, including the African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and the Church of the Nazarene, now observe the second Sunday in June as Children’s Day.
