• Wayside’s Urban Youth Ministry Opens Aurora Neighborhood Baseball LeagueAurora, Ill., June 7, 2010 (The Religion Wire™) — Urban Youth Ministry (UYM) of Wayside Cross Ministries (WCM) began its 17th season of inspiring, motivating, and training the youth of Aurora via the means of baseball. On Saturday, June 5, the Aurora Neighborhood Baseball League held its season opening games and celebration at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Farnsworth Avenue and Grand Boulevard. Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner threw out the league’s first pitch.
The 10-team league draws over 150 boys and girls from the diverse communities of Aurora and works to bridge the racial and economic divide with the league’s deep spiritual commitment to wholeness. The league is comprised of two T-Ball teams, ages 6-8, and eight little league teams, ages 9–10. The season games (June 5–July 31) for the league are held at MLK., Jr. Park and Copley II Park, 517 N. Union St.
“I am so grateful for Mayor Tom Weisner for his help with our open day celebration and his throwing out the ceremonial first pitch,” expresses Scot Thurman, director of UYM. “And with the support of the community, parents, and volunteers, this made for an awesome day.”
