Grand Rapids, Mich., Feb. 2, 2006 (The Religion Wire™ ) — From movies like The Sixth Sense to The Exorcism of Emily Rose to television shows like Revelations and Charmed to books like Harry Potter, the spirit world and all it encompasses are trendy topics in Hollywood and the literary world. But, are these portrayals accurate?

“I would be the first to tell you that the way the invisible world is represented in these various forms of entertainment is, in fact, pure fantasy,” writes Chip Ingram, in his new release, The Invisible War (Baker Books, January 2006). “But I would also be the first to tell you that the reality from which these fantasies arise is rock-solid biblical truth.”

Hollywood, though, is not the only one confused about the reality of the spirit world. Many Christians don’t fully grasp the extent of the invisible battle being waged, chalking things up to coincidence or mishaps, or perhaps even thinking they might be “losing it.” Others have gone to the opposite extreme—basing their views on questionable experiences, rather than biblical truth.

“All I know is that if I stick with Scripture, I’ll always stay on track,” writes Ingram. ”I’ll avoid extremes, I won’t be out of touch with reality, and I won’t become obsessed with the demonic influences in my life. I’ll know what is spiritual conflict and what isn’t, and I’ll be able to deal with issues appropriately.”

Ingram, president and CEO of Walk Thru the Bible and teaching pastor on the international radio program Living on the Edge, points out the Bible serves as a witness to the evil entities and their interaction with human history, and lays out a battle plan for believers. In The Invisible War, he offers four keys to spiritual victory and shares biblically based insights on how believers can effectively arm themselves for the battle. Drawing on the truths presented in Ephesians 6, Ingram reveals:

“The issues faced by believers are not simply a matter of psychology or socialization, they are not random accidents, and they are not fully explainable by organizational dynamics or relational theories,” writes Ingram. “They are spiritual, and the forces behind them are personal.”
